I spoke with Ryan Dyar about six years ago. A lot of things were different back then. Over six years, photography has evolved, we’ve gotten older (although not much wiser), and our styles have evolved. I was excited to speak again, especially since so many of the amazing photographers I talk with list Ryan as an influence on their own photography.
Ryan is a self-described “chubby man-child who points cameras at things.”
I love that.
I’m a big believer in never growing up and keeping a modest and child-like approach to life, self-image, and photography. That feeling of being a man-child is something we discuss at great length during our talk.
On a more serious note, I want to thank Ryan for being so open and vulnerable with his personal journey through addiction and how photography played a major role in bringing him out of it. There is a social and solitary experience that Ryan had through his early years in photography; something he still holds strong to.
